In addition to the Xanth series by Piers Anthony, I have also found a series written by Alan Dean Foster that I enjoy very much. This series is "The Spellsinger Series". This series takes place in another parallel reality (somewhat like Xanth), where all species on earth have evolved much like mankind. In other words, all the "lower lifeforms" as we would call them have evolved into sentient species.

The main characters in this series are a human named Jon-Tom, who is a Spellsinger, (although of course at the beginning of the series, he doesn't know that) and an otter named Mudge, a seemingly ne'er-do-well. The first book in the series concerns Jon-Tom's discovery of this strange new place, and his strange new magic. Singing spells does not come easy to Jon-Tom throughout the series.

Mr. Foster is probably best known for his movie novelizations, including the "Alien" movies, "Star Wars" and others. I have not seen a new "Spellsinger" book since 1994, so I don't know if he has written himself out with this series or what. I'm hopeful there will be new books in the series at some time in the future.

If you do find this series take the time to read it and get to know the characters. I'm sure you will enjour your journey.
